We took that photo on Saturday of our blind mare Lena about to eat the very last of the apples from our root cellar. Alayne harvested several tubs of apples from our trees last fall, and they’ve been stored in our root cellar ever since. While some have, of course, gone bad over the past several months, it’s amazing how many of them lasted this long. For much of the winter, Lena’s been enjoying?an apple a day with her morning grain.
As the quality began to deteriorate in recent weeks, she began getting a couple of apples a day — with morning and evening grain — so we could make sure we fed them out while they were still good. Alas, we finally got to the last one.
Please notice her big pink tongue out in anticipation!
What now? Well, we still have several tubs of carrots in the root cellar that have stored well, so she can?enjoy some of those as long as they last.
Oh BOY! TWO apples a day?? She’s gonna be looking around for that apple in her grain bucket tomorrow. Lucky horse. So, I’m wondering Steve, just how are you going to explain the missing apple??
Sweet picture!!!! She’ll miss those apples!!!
What a sweetheart! That big pink tongue is all ready! This picture is great. I guess she’ll have to switch to carrots. I’m sure she will love those as well.
That’s a beautiful apple, and a beautiful big pink tongue.
What a pretty horse! What a lovely picture.
Thank you for sharing your apples with Lena.
