This sweet girl joined us a couple of months ago from Maine. Her owner first contacted us late last summer, asking if we could take Josie. I had responded with our usual list of follow-up screening questions — about doggie social skills, behavior issues, medical history, etc., but never received a reply.
Then this spring the owner contacted us again, saying she had “tried to make it work” but felt she could no longer keep Josie. This time she answered all of our screening questions, and Josie sounded like a perfect fit. But we never did learn why she needed to surrender Josie, who seemed like an ideal dog in every respect.
In the past couple of years Josie lost her vision to glaucoma, and had both eyes enucleated to eliminate the pain.
She’s a big girl, in a large frame and clocking in close to 70 pounds. She’s the biggest dog we have right now, in fact! Josie is about 8 years old. She also answers to Josephine and JoJo.
Her breed mix is a bit of a mystery, but we think she might be something like a German Shorthaired Pointer (for all her spots) and crossed with a Lab perhaps. Her ticking pattern is definitely more like the German Shorthaired Pointer, not the large spots of a Dalmatian.
Josie is just a complete sweetheart. She’s quiet, calm, friendly, affectionate, gets along well with others, is completely house-trained, and has all-around excellent house manners. I mean, she’s like the perfect dog! This is why we were perplexed the owner couldn’t keep her.
But, we are delighted she’s joined us here!

So happy Josie is fitting in and enjoying her life with you. I know it would be hard for me to have my dogs’ eyes removed and perhaps her previous owner could not live with that reality. She is a very caring owner to seek you out.

Wow, what a nice looking dog! And she doesn’t look her age. Her coloring hides any gray on her face. It’s funny how quickly they learn that they are in a place where they are loved. Her rolling dog maneuver says it all. Enjoy, Josie. You are home!

What a sweet girl! I doubt the problem was anything about Josie. It seems like the owner cared for her, and cared about her, and probably agonized about having to give her up. Sometimes people’s circumstances change, and they just… can’t. I’m glad the owner decided to entrust her to the best possible forever home.
